Hvar and other Croatian tourist sites face crowds and cost concerns
Croatia's popular tourist destinations present a contrast between high-energy commercial hubs and quieter, nature-focused areas. Hvar Island, often recognized for its vibrant nightlife and party reputation, also offers more tranquil alternatives for travelers seeking seclusion. Areas such as Jelsa, Stari Grad, and Vrboska provide calmer settings characterized by pine forests, pebbly coves, and a slower pace suitable for families.
However, some of Croatia's most famous landmarks face criticism regarding crowds and costs. Dubrovnik's Old Town is noted for extreme congestion in its narrow streets during peak seasons, while Plitvice Lakes National Park has seen significant increases in entrance fees. Additionally, Split's Diocletian's Palace is sometimes viewed as overly touristy, leading some travelers to seek more authentic experiences on islands like Korcula or Vis.
