Hwang Hee-chan joins Schalke 04 on loan from Wolverhampton

South Korean forward Hwang Hee-chan has completed a dramatic loan move from Wolverhampton Wanderers to Schalke 04. The transfer was finalized just 35 seconds before the German transfer window closed, following technical and organizational delays regarding digital signatures.

The deal is a one-season loan lasting until June 30, 2027, and includes an option for Schalke to make the transfer permanent for a fee of 3 million euros. Hwang, 30, returns to the Bundesliga for the first time in five years after previously playing for Hamburger SV and RB Leipzig.

Schalke sports director Frank Baumann described the deal as a high-stakes race against time. Hwang has already joined team training and is expected to make his debut in an upcoming match against Bayern Munich, potentially setting up a ‘Korean Derby’ with Bayern defender Kim Min-jae.
