Hwaseong City promotes kiwi cultivation as strategic crop

Hwaseong City is promoting kiwi cultivation as a strategic crop to respond to climate change and enhance the competitiveness of local agriculture. The initiative includes a comprehensive support system spanning production, distribution, and consumption.

The Hwaseong Kiwi Research Association, established in 2024, currently consists of 13 farms cultivating 3.3 hectares of kiwi. To support these farmers, the city provides technical training, field consultations, and materials such as windbreak nets and irrigation facilities. A pilot pollen bank has also been launched to assist with artificial pollination.

To expand consumption, the city is collaborating across departments to link production with school meal supplies. Recent training sessions for 48 nutrition teachers and childcare officials introduced various kiwi-based recipes, including kiwi sauce chicken cutlets and kiwi jelly, to encourage the use of local produce in school cafeterias.
