Hyatt Hotel in Playa del Carmen Faces Potential Strike Over Labor Dispute

The Labor Tribunal of Chetumal has scheduled a possible strike against the Hyatt hotel in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, after a lawsuit filed by the Revolutionary Confederation of Workers and Peasants (CROC). The claim alleges violations of the collective bargaining agreement by the hotel's owner, Inmobiliaria y Proyectos Trplaya. The court granted the union three days to set a new strike date, warning that failure to do so will result in the case being closed.

The demand, submitted on June 26 by the National Union of Workers in the Food, Beverage, Tourism, Hotel, Gastronomy, and Related Industries, adds the Hyatt to ten other hotels in the Riviera Maya region—Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Cozumel and Isla Mujeres—already facing similar proceedings. A conciliatory hearing is slated for October; should the hotel not meet the union’s demands, a strike could be triggered within days.
