Hybrid cat breeding faces welfare and regulatory scrutiny
The breeding and ownership of hybrid cats, such as the Bengal, have become a subject of discussion regarding animal welfare and regulation. These cats are bred to combine the exotic appearance of wild ancestors with the temperament of domestic house cats.
In some regions, such as North Rhine-Westphalia, the government has addressed inquiries regarding the breeding and keeping of these animals. Certain generations of hybrids, specifically the F1 through F4, retain significant wild characteristics. Consequently, veterinary authorities may require specific permits for their ownership. Organizations like the Swiss animal welfare group STS have advised against the trade of hybrid cats and called for stricter regulations.
