Hybrid heating systems allow gradual heat pump installation
Homeowners do not need to complete full energetic renovations before installing a heat pump. By utilizing a hybrid heating system, a new heat pump can be combined with an existing gas or oil heating unit to facilitate a gradual transition.
In a hybrid setup, the heat pump handles the majority of the heat supply, while the existing system manages peak loads during particularly cold periods. This allows the heat pump to be sized according to the building's future, lower energy requirements following planned renovations, such as improved facade insulation or new windows.
Experts warn that sizing a heat pump solely for an uninsulated building can lead to inefficiency. If the building is later renovated, an oversized unit may suffer from frequent cycling, known as ‘Takten’, which reduces overall efficiency. Hans-Jürgen Nowak of the WÄRME+ initiative advises that heating technology should be coordinated with the building's future energetic state.
