Chinese automakers lead global electric vehicle sales in 2026
The global automotive industry is undergoing a significant shift driven by electrification and the rising dominance of Chinese manufacturers. According to SNE Research, Chinese group BYD led global electric vehicle sales from January to July 2026 with 1.816 million units, despite a 17.9% year-on-year decline. Geely followed in second place with 1.172 million units, while Tesla ranked third with 943,000 units. Total global electric vehicle sales reached 11.8 million units during this seven-month period, representing a 6.3% increase from 2025.
In Europe, Chinese brands are gaining substantial market share. In Spain, Chinese-made vehicles accounted for over 15% of new car sales in 2026. This expansion is fueled by advancements in software-defined vehicles, battery technology, and competitive pricing. While European manufacturers maintain strong technical expertise, they face challenges regarding production costs and the rapid development cycles seen in Asia, where new models can be brought to market in as little as two years.
Regional markets are also showing distinct trends. Mexico reported a 22% growth in electromobility sales during the first half of 2026, with charging infrastructure expanding by over 55%. Meanwhile, traditional luxury brands are responding to the shift; Bentley has introduced the Torcal, its first fully electric SUV, featuring up to 888 CV and advanced battery architecture to compete in the evolving high-end segment.
