Hyde Amendment marks 50 years of preventing federal abortion funding

The Hyde Amendment, which prevents federal taxpayer dollars from funding abortions, is marking its 50th anniversary. Originally introduced by former Illinois Congressman Henry Hyde, the amendment was first enacted on September 30, 1976. It prohibits the Departments of Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education from using funds for abortion services.

Proponents and organizations such as Americans United for Life are celebrating the milestone. The Charlotte Lozier Institute estimates that the amendment has saved approximately 2.67 million lives since its inception. Supporters note that the amendment has survived numerous legal challenges, including being upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court in the 1980 case Harris v. McRae.

A 2009 review by the Guttmacher Institute indicated that one-fourth of peer-reviewed studies on Medicaid funding restrictions provided statistically significant evidence that the amendment contributed to a decrease in abortion rates. Advocates continue to defend the provision against legislative efforts to remove it.
