HYDEF hypersonic interceptor programme completes feasibility phase

The European HYDEF hypersonic interceptor programme has successfully completed its feasibility phase following a Preliminary Requirements Review (PRR) held on August 26, 2026. The review, conducted at Diehl facilities in Überlingen, Germany, involved technical specialists, national coordinators, the HYDEF industrial consortium, and representatives from the Organisation for Joint Armament Cooperation (OCCAR).

The conclusion of this phase marks the final technical milestone of the programme’s first stage. During this period, the consortium defined the selected interceptor concept, including technical solutions, development plans, and functional architecture. The review confirmed that the system meets international interoperability standards, including relevant NATO Standardisation Agreements (STANAGs), and provided lifecycle cost data for the chosen concept.

All critical technologies for the Block 0 configuration have reached at least Technology Readiness Level 3 (TRL 3), with viability demonstrated through simulations and functional tests. Moving forward, the programme aims to develop a TRL 6 prototype. OCCAR reported that activities are progressing ahead of schedule, positioning the project to enter its second stage, EATMI II.
