Hyderabad auto-rickshaw fares proposed to increase

A state government-appointed committee has recommended a significant increase in auto-rickshaw fares in Hyderabad. The Auto Fare Revision Committee submitted its proposal to the Telangana government on September 3, suggesting the minimum fare be raised from ₹20 to ₹30. Additionally, the per-kilometer charge is proposed to increase from ₹11 to ₹14.

Under the new structure, the first 1.6 kilometers would cost a minimum of ₹30. The committee also proposed a waiting charge of 75 paise per minute and a night-time surcharge of 1.5 times the normal fare for trips between 11 pm and 5 am. Luggage exceeding 60 cm x 40 cm, up to a maximum of 100 kg, would incur extra charges.

This marks the first proposed fare adjustment in nearly 12 years, with the last rates set in February 2014. The revision follows threats of an indefinite strike by auto, cab, and school-van drivers' unions, who had been demanding fare updates and relief from other economic pressures. A final decision from the government is expected in the coming days.
