Hyderabad dark stores raided by TG SAFE over hygiene violations

The Telangana Standards Authority for Food and Essential Drugs (TG SAFE) conducted raids on 16 dark stores operated by retail platforms in Hyderabad to increase oversight of quick-commerce operations. Ten enforcement teams, consisting of Food Safety Officers and police personnel, inspected the facilities.

The inspections uncovered significant hygiene breaches, including cockroach infestations, rusted shelving, cobwebs, and improper flooring. Officials identified expired food items, rotten vegetables with fungal growth, and instances where food was stored alongside non-food items. In one specific raid at an Instakart location in Pather Gatti, inspectors found expired cut fruits, batter, cashews, and ghee, as well as leaking milk packets and improper freezer maintenance.

As a result of these findings, TG SAFE suspended the regulatory licences of four establishments, ordering an immediate halt to their business operations due to acute health hazards. Additionally, 15 samples were collected for testing due to suspected adulteration, and multiple outlets were issued formal improvement and show-cause notices.
