Telangana and Andhra Pradesh prepare for El Niño drought impacts

Authorities in southern India are implementing emergency measures to combat the impact of El Niño, which has caused rainfall deficits and drought-like conditions. In Telangana, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has ordered a comprehensive action plan to manage potential crises in drinking water, irrigation, agriculture, and electricity supply over the next eight months. The state has requested a ₹20,000 crore special package from the central government and is seeking additional employment days under existing schemes to support affected populations. Officials have also advised farmers against cultivating second crops, such as the Rabi crop, due to declining groundwater and reservoir levels.

To mitigate electricity shortages, the government is encouraging the conservation of power and the postponement of energy-intensive activities. In Andhra Pradesh, officials are similarly calling for collective action on energy and water conservation to protect agricultural and industrial productivity.

In Hyderabad, urban infrastructure is also being addressed. Chief Minister Reddy has directed officials to explore a Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) system to alleviate heavy traffic congestion and connect major transit hubs like Metro and MMTS stations. Plans to expedite flyover construction and implement one-way traffic systems around KBR Park are also underway to improve city connectivity.
