Hyderabad placed on flash flood watch amid heavy rainfall

Hyderabad is under a flash flood watch for Sunday, 20 September 2026, as forecasts indicate river flow at twice the normal median. Residents are advised to prepare for potential waterlogging and travel disruptions.

Recent rainfall in the city has been highly localized. While some areas like Nagole and the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport recorded over 59 mm of rain, several other monitoring points reported no rainfall at all. Heavy showers in southern and southeastern sectors have already caused traffic congestion, particularly near Ganesh festival sites.

The India Meteorological Department predicts that the rain spell will continue across Telangana, with light to moderate rain or thundershowers expected through at least 25 September. Due to the combination of rain and Ganesh immersion activities, the Cyberabad Traffic Police have advised educational institutions and companies to consider staggered working hours, work-from-home arrangements, or online classes.
