Hyderabad plans massive 1.32 lakh-seat multipurpose cricket stadium

The Telangana government is planning to construct a massive multipurpose cricket stadium in Bharat Future City near Hyderabad. The proposed 100-acre facility is expected to feature a seating capacity exceeding 1.32 lakh, which would make it larger than the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Under the proposed plan, the state government will provide the land, while the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is expected to cover construction and maintenance costs. The venue is envisioned as an international-standard facility capable of hosting football matches, large-scale concerts, and major conventions. The project aims to integrate with the broader Sports City and Net-Zero City concepts for the region, benefiting from planned connectivity via the Outer Ring Road, the Regional Ring Road, and metro extensions.

The project has drawn mixed reactions. While supporters believe it will enhance Hyderabad’s status as a global sports hub, critics have questioned the necessity of a second massive stadium given the existing Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Uppal. Some experts have characterized the project as a potential waste of resources, suggesting that investment should instead be directed toward diverse sporting facilities for football, hockey, and athletics.
