Hyderabad: Tension erupts after egg allegedly thrown at Durga procession

Tension broke out in the Madannapet area of Hyderabad’s Old City in the early hours of Sunday after an egg was allegedly thrown near a Goddess Durga idol immersion procession. The incident occurred around 2:00 AM as the procession, organized by the Veer Savarkar Nava Yuva Sangham, was passing through the Santosh Hotel lane.

In response to the incident, members of Hindu organizations and local residents staged protests, including sit-ins and devotional singing, demanding strict legal action against those responsible. The BJP has also reacted, with spokespersons alleging that religious processions are being deliberately targeted.

Police officials, including Charminar Zone DCP Kiran Khare, arrived at the scene to restore order. Authorities have registered a case under Section 299 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for acts intended to outrage religious feelings. At least one suspect has been taken into custody, and investigators are reviewing CCTV footage to identify others involved.

Law enforcement has urged the public to remain calm and refrain from spreading unverified rumors or misinformation on social media to prevent further communal tension.
