Hydra: Historic estate of painter Nikos Hadjikyriakos-Ghika for sale
The historic estate of the renowned Greek painter Nikos Hadjikyriakos-Ghika is being offered for sale on the island of Hydra. The property, located in the Kaminias area, is listed for approximately 3.96 million euros or 4.49 million dollars.
The estate, which has been in the artist's family since the 18th century, was renovated by Ghika in 1937 to serve as both a residence and a studio. It became a notable gathering place for figures in arts and letters, including British author Patrick Leigh Fermor and painter John Craxton. Fermor once described the home as a ‘prose laboratory’.
A fire in 1961 destroyed the main residence, leaving ruins that remain on the 4,141 square meter plot. The property offers unobstructed views of the sea and the Peloponnese. A reconstruction permit has been issued for the main residence and two guesthouses, totaling approximately 1,078 square meters, with plans to create a modern home that maintains a connection to the site's historical significance.
