Hydrangea care: Autumn root trimming for better flowering

To ensure lush flowering and frost resistance in hydrangeas, experts suggest a specific autumn procedure involving the gentle trimming of lateral roots. By slightly damaging the outer roots with a spade, the plant is induced into a state of stress that shifts its energy from growth to survival. This process causes stems to lignify faster and encourages the development of more lateral branches with abundant flower clusters in the following season.

This technique should be performed in early autumn before strong frosts occur. It is recommended to use a sharp spade to cut only the external, side roots without lifting or excavating the entire root ball. This procedure is intended to complement, not replace, standard autumn care such as watering, mulching, and applying phosphorus and potassium fertilizers.
