Hydrangea care: Managing soil pH for flower color

Achieving blue flowers in certain hydrangea varieties, such as Hydrangea macrophylla, depends on soil pH and aluminum availability. To produce blue blooms, the soil must be acidic, ideally with a pH between 4.5 and 5. If the soil is calcareous or has a higher pH, the flowers will appear pink or purple.

Common home remedies, such as using coffee grounds, are often ineffective for this purpose. Coffee grounds typically have a pH between 6.5 and 6.8, which is not acidic enough to reliably change the soil chemistry for hydrangea color modification.

Proper care for hydrangeas also requires consistent moisture, as the plants do not manage water well and are prone to wilting. Different species offer various aesthetic benefits: Hydrangea paniculata features cone-shaped blooms, while Hydrangea petiolaris is a climbing variety suitable for fences or walls. Preparation for successful blooming should ideally begin in the autumn.
