Hydration and its role in maintaining kidney health

Adequate fluid intake is essential for kidney function, as the kidneys rely on water to filter blood, remove waste products, and regulate the balance of water and electrolytes. Dehydration can reduce blood flow to the kidneys, potentially leading to acute kidney injury. Symptoms of dehydration include thirst, dry mouth, decreased urine volume, fatigue, and dizziness.

Individual hydration needs vary based on age, weight, physical activity levels, climate, pregnancy, and overall health status. While some suggest a fixed amount of water daily, such as eight glasses, actual requirements depend on personal factors and can also be met through moisture in foods like fruits and vegetables.

To support kidney health, experts recommend drinking fluids regularly, limiting salt intake, and managing blood pressure and blood sugar levels. Additionally, avoiding the frequent, unprescribed use of certain medications like ibuprofen and naproxen is advised, as they can cause kidney damage. Individuals with existing kidney or heart conditions should consult a physician regarding specific fluid intake limits.
