Hydration experts recommend drinking water before morning coffee
Health experts recommend drinking a glass of water immediately after waking up, ideally before consuming the first cup of coffee. This practice helps replenish fluids lost through breathing and sweating during sleep.
Ethan Balk, an associate professor of clinical nutrition at NYU Steinhardt, suggests consuming between 250 and 500 milliliters of water to improve energy levels and overall well-being. Drinking water can also mitigate stomach discomfort caused by the acidity of coffee, especially when consumed on an empty stomach.
Research published in Psychological Research indicates that prolonged dehydration can negatively impact cognitive functions, such as reasoning and decision-making. Additionally, experts warn against consuming caffeine within the first 60 minutes of waking, as it may interfere with the body's natural cortisol response and lead to afternoon energy crashes.
