Hydration guidelines: Water temperature and container choices
Optimal water consumption involves considering both temperature and the type of container used for hydration. Regarding temperature, extremely cold water can force the body to expend extra energy to balance internal temperatures, potentially slowing digestion or causing throat discomfort and headaches in sensitive individuals. Room temperature water is considered a comfortable option for daily hydration and accompanying meals, while warm water is often used in the morning to facilitate a smooth transition after sleep.
When selecting containers, health experts recommend glass or stainless steel over plastic. Glass is noted as the most hygienic and inert option, as it does not react chemically or transfer flavors. Stainless steel is highlighted for its durability and ability to maintain temperature, particularly with double-walled vacuum insulation. Plastic is the least recommended due to the risks of microplastic release, degradation over time, and the tendency to retain bacteria and odors.
