Hydration strategies for managing heat and dehydration

Maintaining proper hydration is critical during heatwaves to prevent health risks such as heatstroke, dizziness, and cardiovascular strain. To determine daily water needs, adults should multiply their body weight by 30-35 milliliters. For example, a 60 kg adult requires approximately 1.8 to 2.1 liters daily. During intense heat or physical exertion, fluid loss can exceed one liter per hour, necessitating roughly 250 ml of water every 15-20 minutes.

Scientific research, including studies from the University of Toronto, suggests that how water is consumed is as important as the quantity. Drinking large amounts of water all at once can trigger the body to expel excess liquid through urine more quickly, reducing effective absorption. Instead, sipping water frequently is a more efficient strategy for sustained hydration.

Warning signs of dehydration include dark yellow urine, dry mouth, headaches, fatigue, and muscle cramps. Severe cases can lead to nausea, low blood pressure, tachycardia, and loss of consciousness. To maintain fluid balance, it is recommended to consume seasonal fruits and vegetables while avoiding caffeinated or sugary drinks, which can have a diuretic effect.
