Hydration timing and its effects on sleep and daily health

Hydration timing can significantly impact sleep quality and daily cognitive function. Drinking large amounts of water immediately before bed may lead to nocturia, a condition where the need to urinate interrupts sleep cycles. According to experts from the Cleveland Clinic, these repeated interruptions can prevent deep rest, leading to daytime fatigue and reduced energy.

Conversely, starting the day with water helps replenish fluids lost through breathing and sweating during sleep, which can range from 400 to 700 milliliters. While not strictly mandatory if total daily intake is sufficient, morning hydration can prevent mild dehydration. Even a loss of 1% to 2% of body mass through dehydration can negatively affect concentration, short-term memory, and mood.

General recommendations from the Institute of Medicine suggest daily fluid intake targets of approximately 2 to 2.7 liters for women and 2.5 to 3.7 liters for men, including water from food.
