Hydro advances sustainable aluminium production through technology

Hydro, a leading company in aluminium and renewable energy, is focusing on technological innovation to reduce energy consumption and climate emissions throughout the aluminium value chain. The company utilizes its control over processes ranging from bauxite mining to recycling to improve productivity and sustainability.

In Norway, Hydro leverages hydropower, wind, and solar energy for primary aluminium production. A key technological advancement includes the Karmøy technology pilot plant, which uses proprietary HAL4e technology to produce highly energy-efficient primary aluminium. This technology has also been implemented at the Husnes production facility to double capacity.

Hydro has established a climate strategy aiming to reduce CO2 emissions by 30% by 2030, with a long-term goal of providing net-zero aluminium by 2050 or earlier. The company employs approximately 32,000 people across more than 140 locations in 40 countries.
