The aluminium sector is responsible for about 2 % of global CO₂‑e emissions, largely because fossil fuels power the smelting process and the electrolytic reaction itself releases carbon. Hydro says it will cut its own emissions by 30 % by 2030 compared with the 2018 baseline and aims to achieve net‑zero emissions in primary aluminium production by 2050 or earlier.
The company’s decarbonisation plan focuses on three pathways: phasing out fossil‑based energy across the entire value chain, eliminating direct process emissions, and increasing the recycling of post‑consumer aluminium scrap. By using renewable electricity, Hydro claims its primary aluminium can be produced with a carbon footprint roughly one‑quarter of the global average, and it is working to extend clean‑energy use from mine to metal.
Hydro will pursue advanced technologies and intensified circular‑economy initiatives to meet these targets and to position aluminium as a key enabler of the broader energy transition.
