Hydro Tasmania extends life of Huxley Hill Wind Farm

Hydro Tasmania has completed a major refurbishment of the Huxley Hill Wind Farm on King Island, extending the operational life of the facility by at least 10 years. The project, led by Hydro Tasmania subsidiary Entura, utilized a “repowering” strategy by restoring and reusing existing components rather than replacing the five turbines with entirely new units. This included repairing a turbine damaged during an extreme wind event in early 2025 and refurbishing nacelles in Denmark.

The wind farm is a critical component of the King Island Renewable Integration Project (KIREIP), a hybrid off-grid system that includes solar power and battery storage. This system allows the island, which is not connected to the mainland or Tasmanian grids, to be regularly powered by 100 per cent renewables. The wind turbines alone provide approximately 32 per cent of the island’s annual energy demand, displacing roughly 640,000 litres of diesel each year.
