Hydrogen certification for RFNBO expected to begin in 2025

The certification of Renewable Fuels of Non-Biologic Origin (RFNBO) is set to become fully operational in 2025. While German regulations intended to allow hydrogen quota trading to begin in July 2024, the process was delayed because the European Commission had not yet recognized any certification systems at that time.

In December 2024, the European Commission officially recognized three certification systems: ISCC, REDcert, and Certifhy. This recognition allows for the formal accounting of hydrogen production toward greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction quotas. Consequently, 2025 will serve as the first true certification year for producers seeking to participate in the hydrogen quota market.
