Hydrogen Storage Projects Aim to Boost US Grid Resilience

The U.S. electricity grid faces a long‑duration storage gap as solar and wind generation become more variable. A 2026 GAO assessment highlights hydrogen as the most mature candidate for seasonal storage, capable of holding energy for months or years, albeit with a round‑trip efficiency of about 60 %. Commercial‑scale projects are under way, such as the Advanced Clean Energy Storage facility in Utah, which will produce up to 100 tons of hydrogen per day and store 11,000 tons in underground salt caverns to support the Intermountain Power Project’s blended‑fuel turbines.

Geographically, suitable salt caverns are concentrated along the Gulf Coast (Texas, Louisiana) and in the Rocky Mountain region, limiting deployment in states like California that lack such geology. Alternatives such as depleted oil and gas reservoirs pose technical challenges. Meanwhile, the growing share of intermittent renewables is prompting wider interest in grid‑forming technologies that can maintain stability and resilience, underscoring hydrogen’s role in future power‑system designs.
