Hydrogen technology advances in aviation and renewable energy sectors
Developments in hydrogen technology are showing progress in both aviation and renewable energy sectors, though significant technical and logistical challenges remain.
In Japan, Kawasaki Heavy Industries has developed a milestone aircraft engine capable of burning 100% hydrogen. The technology utilizes a ‘micromix’ method, which divides the flame into thousands of tiny flames to prevent extreme temperature zones. This approach addresses the issue of nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions, which typically increase during high-temperature hydrogen combustion.
In Spain, green hydrogen is central to decarbonization efforts for industry and heavy transport. While the country possesses high renewable potential and strategic geographic positioning, a gap exists between official objectives and actual production. Challenges include delays in project execution, regulatory bottlenecks, permitting issues, and a lack of firm industrial demand to support the transition from fossil-fuel-based hydrogen to clean alternatives.
