Hygiene and maintenance tips for bathroom sanitation

Experts suggest that for a household of approximately five people, a thorough cleaning of the toilet once a week is sufficient under normal conditions. Delia Cannings of the British Cleaning Council and microbiologist Primrose Freestone from the University of Leicester both support weekly hygiene as adequate for standard situations.

However, cleaning frequency should increase if a resident has an infectious disease, in which case cleaning should occur after each use to reduce transmission risks. Detailed cleaning should include often-overlooked areas such as hinges, supports, and the space under the seat.

Persistent unpleasant odors in bathrooms may not be caused by visible dirt but by hidden issues. Common causes include debris accumulation in drains, loss of the water seal in siphons, or inadequate ventilation. Additionally, a damaged or incorrectly installed toilet seal can allow sewage gases to escape from the base of the fixture. In such cases, technical evaluation may be required to resolve the issue.
