Hygiene risks in reusable water bottles
Regular cleaning of reusable water bottles is essential to prevent them from becoming breeding grounds for bacteria and microbes. While glass, plastic, and stainless steel bottles are more environmentally friendly than single-use options, they require proper hygiene to avoid contamination.
Research highlights the risks of inadequate cleaning. An analysis by TreadmillReviews of twelve plastic reusable bottles found an average of over 300,000 colony-forming units per square centimeter. Similar findings have been reported in studies from China, and a 2017 US study noted that without intensive cleaning, bottles can become significant sources of microbial contamination. Most bacteria originate from the user's mouth, saliva, or intestinal tract.
