Hygiene tips for washing machines and facial towels
Household hygiene experts highlight common causes of bacteria and mold buildup in washing machines and bathroom textiles.
In washing machines, unpleasant odors are often caused by a biofilm of bacteria, grease, and detergent residue. This occurs frequently when washing at low temperatures (30 or 40 degrees Celsius), which are insufficient to kill microorganisms. Liquid detergents and softeners can exacerbate the issue as their fatty components may not rinse away completely at low temperatures. To combat this, it is recommended to run a monthly 90-degree cycle without laundry, clean the door rubber, wash the detergent drawer, and clear the filter. Leaving the door and drawer open after use helps prevent moisture buildup.
Regarding facial hygiene, hanging face towels in damp, poorly ventilated bathrooms can lead to the accumulation of microorganisms, sebum, and skin debris. Using towels in humid environments or near toilets increases the risk of skin irritation, especially for those with sensitive or acne-prone skin. Experts suggest using a dedicated towel for the face, spreading it out to dry quickly after use, and replacing it every two to three days.
