Hynek Kmoníček calls for UN reform to reflect modern reality

Hynek Kmoníček, the new head of the Czech Republic's permanent mission to the United Nations in New York, has stated that the UN risks becoming irrelevant if it fails to undergo significant reform. Kmoníček argues that the organization must be updated to reflect modern geopolitical realities rather than the landscape of 1950.

A primary focus of the proposed reforms should be expanding the membership of the UN Security Council, which Kmoníček believes no longer represents the current political and economic weight of its permanent members. He noted that the Czech Republic should support these reform processes.

Regarding the upcoming UN General Assembly in September, Kmoníček identified the restoration of trust as a central theme. He observed that the UN has already begun responding to criticism through fiscal measures, including a 7% budget reduction between last year and this year. Kmoníček also suggested that pressure from the United States could serve as a catalyst for systemic movement, despite potential friction between the UN and the MAGA movement.
