Hyosung Heavy Industries builds South Korea’s first 2GW HVDC verification facility

Hyosung Heavy Industries has established South Korea’s first performance verification facility for 2GW-class High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) technology based on its own proprietary technology. The facility, a Hardware-In-the-Loop Simulation (HILS) system located at the company’s research institute in Gwacheon, allows for the testing of large-capacity HVDC controllers in environments that simulate actual power grids.

By connecting actual HVDC controllers to virtual 2GW-class converter valves and power grids, the system can simulate complex operating conditions, grid failures, and emergency scenarios that are difficult to test on real power networks. This is particularly critical for 2GW-class systems, which require two to three times more verification scenarios than the previous 200MW-class systems.

This development marks a significant step in the localization of HVDC technology, a sector currently dominated by a small number of global companies. Hyosung Heavy Industries aims to use this technology to support the construction of the ‘West Coast Energy Highway’ and expand its presence in the growing global HVDC market, which is expected to reach approximately $22 billion by 2030.
