Hypercharge billing error charges driver 22,308 CAD for 30-minute EV charge

A Canadian driver experienced a massive billing error after charging a Kia EV9 at a Hypercharge station. What was intended to be a 30-minute session resulted in a bill for 22,308.42 Canadian dollars (approximately 13,900 to 14,500 euros).

The incident occurred on May 17, 2025, when the vehicle drew 4.91 kWh of energy. Due to a communication failure between the charging station and the Hypercharge network, the system failed to register that the vehicle had disconnected. Because the operator uses time-based billing, the session remained officially open for over 15 months, totaling 11,154 hours of continuous charging in the system's records.

The error was eventually corrected after the user contested the charge. Hypercharge confirmed that the massive amount was never actually debited from the customer's account.
