Hypertension campaign launched in France to combat silent killer

Hypertension affects approximately 17 million adults in France, representing nearly one in three adults. Because the condition often presents no symptoms, it is frequently referred to by medical professionals, such as cardiologist Claire Mounier-Vehier, as a ‘silent killer.’

In response to the high number of undiagnosed cases—estimated at over 6 million people—the Assurance Maladie launched a national campaign in September 2026 titled ‘Votre tension mérite toute votre attention’ (Your blood pressure deserves all your attention). The initiative encourages individuals to request blood pressure measurements during routine consultations with doctors, nurses, or midwives.

According to Santé publique France, hypertension is defined by persistent systolic pressure of 140 mmHg or higher, or diastolic pressure of 90 mmHg or higher. The condition is linked to over 55,000 deaths annually in France, accounting for roughly 8.5% of the country's total deaths, and results in hundreds of thousands of hospitalizations.
