Hypertension Management: Lifestyle Changes and Baduanjin Qigong Show Benefits
Maintaining blood pressure within healthy limits is essential to prevent cardiovascular diseases such as stroke and heart attack. Recommended lifestyle measures include achieving a healthy weight, following the DASH diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins, engaging in at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity per week, limiting alcohol, quitting smoking, reducing dietary sodium, and managing stress through relaxation techniques.
A recent randomized multicenter trial published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology found that practicing the traditional Chinese qigong routine Baduanjin for 10‑15 minutes daily lowered systolic blood pressure as effectively as brisk walking. The study involved 216 adults aged 40 and older with stage‑1 hypertension, was led by Jing Li of the National Center for Cardiovascular Diseases in Beijing, and highlighted the routine’s safety, simplicity and potential for long‑term adherence.
Both the general lifestyle recommendations and the Baduanjin findings support accessible, low‑cost interventions that can be adopted worldwide to improve hypertension control.
