Hypertension management shifts focus to heart, brain, and kidney protection

Medical experts in Taiwan are advocating for a shift in managing hypertension, moving beyond merely monitoring blood pressure numbers to a comprehensive approach focused on protecting the heart, brain, and kidneys.

Dr. Li Yi-heng of National Cheng Kung University Hospital emphasizes that hypertension is a major risk factor for stroke, myocardial infarction, and chronic kidney disease. He warns that because high blood pressure often lacks obvious symptoms, patients may mistakenly stop medication when they feel well, leading to irreversible organ damage. Effective management requires early intervention, consistent medication adherence, and lifestyle adjustments such as reducing salt and oil intake.

Clinical strategies are increasingly focusing on improving treatment convenience to help patients maintain long-term medication habits. Doctors recommend regular home monitoring and regular follow-ups to allow for precise adjustments to treatment plans.
