Hypertension risks and blood pressure monitoring methods
Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is a significant risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, including heart attacks, strokes, and kidney failure. Often referred to as a silent danger, the condition can remain asymptomatic for years, meaning many individuals are unaware of their status until complications arise.
The World Health Organization defines hypertension in adults as blood pressure equal to or greater than 140/90 mmHg. Risk factors include excessive salt consumption, obesity, physical inactivity, smoking, alcohol use, age, and family history. While often asymptomatic, severe cases may present with intense headaches, vision disturbances, chest pain, or breathing difficulties.
To improve diagnostic accuracy, medical professionals may utilize Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring (ABPM). This involves a portable device that measures blood pressure over a 24-hour period, inflating a cuff on the arm at regular intervals during both day and night. This method helps clinicians identify fluctuations, such as nocturnal hypertension, and develop more informed treatment plans.
