Hypertension risks and management strategies

Hypertension, often referred to as the ‘silent killer,’ remains a significant global health concern due to its lack of early symptoms. According to reports citing the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately half of adults in the United States are affected by high blood pressure, yet many fail to manage the condition effectively.

Blood pressure is measured by two figures: systolic pressure, occurring during heartbeats, and diastolic pressure, measured between beats. If left unmanaged, the constant pressure on the cardiovascular system can lead to severe complications, including heart disease and strokes, which are leading causes of death worldwide.

Risk factors include chronic conditions like diabetes, high sodium intake, physical inactivity, smoking, and genetics. High-risk groups include the elderly and those with limited access to healthcare. Management typically involves lifestyle changes—such as regular exercise, reduced salt intake, and stress management—alongside medical interventions like diuretics or ACE inhibitors when prescribed by doctors.
