Hypertension risks highlighted by clinical study and regional screenings
A study presented at the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) 2026 Congress emphasizes that taking blood pressure medication strictly according to medical instructions is vital for protecting the heart and brain. Analyzing data from over 91,000 participants across nine clinical trials, researchers found that patients with high treatment adherence (at least 80% of prescribed doses) achieved a systolic blood pressure reduction of 5.2 mmHg, compared to only 3 mmHg in those with lower adherence. Consistent medication use significantly improves protection against myocardial infarction and stroke.
In North Macedonia, recent preventative screenings conducted by the University Clinic for Neurology in Skopje, Tetovo, Kavadar, and Shtip revealed high rates of hypertension among participants. Out of 174 citizens tested, 34.5% were found to have high blood pressure. Additionally, 19.5% showed high blood sugar levels and 25.9% had high blood lipid levels. The clinic is conducting these activities to raise awareness for World Stroke Day, focusing on early symptom recognition and prevention.
