Hypertension risks increase during high heat and humidity

High temperatures and high humidity can cause serious health consequences for individuals with hypertension and heart disease. According to Athanasios Manolis, Director of the Cardiology Clinic and Hypertension Center at Metropolitan Hospital, the body's attempt to cool itself by increasing blood flow to the skin can cause tachycardia and double the amount of blood circulating per minute compared to a normal day.

The greatest risks occur during heatwaves when humidity exceeds 70%. Vulnerable groups include the elderly, overweight individuals, and those with heart, lung, or kidney diseases. Heat and sweating can lead to dehydration by reducing body fluids, which decreases blood volume and impairs the body's ability to cool itself, potentially leading to severe cardiovascular complications.

Risk factors also include outdoor activities, certain medications such as diuretics or sedatives, and diets low in sodium. Individuals with a history of high blood pressure are advised to monitor their pressure closely during heatwaves.
