Hypertension treatment rates remain low in Argentina

Global and local reports indicate significant gaps in the management of hypertension. According to the World Heart Federation, hypertension affects one in four adults worldwide, yet only one in five individuals maintains adequate control.

In Argentina, the Argentine Society of Cardiology reports that one in three inhabitants suffers from hypertension, a condition more frequent in men. Research conducted by the Cardiology Service of the Hospital de Clínicas showed that while 63.9% of the studied population had hypertension, only 49% were receiving treatment, and a mere 10% maintained blood pressure within recommended parameters.

Dr. Verónica Volberg, head of the Cardiology Division at the Hospital de Clínicas (UBA), noted that hypertension is a primary cause of stroke and heart failure. Because the condition is often asymptomatic, many diagnoses occur only during routine medical check-ups. In Argentina, approximately 38.8% of people with high blood pressure are unaware of their condition, and only 24.2% of hypertensive patients achieve adequate blood pressure levels.
