HYPREP provides scholarships and vocational training in Ogoniland
The Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) has launched several empowerment initiatives for the Ogoni community in Rivers State, Nigeria. The project provided postgraduate scholarship grants to 500 students in Port Harcourt to foster human capital development and address regional developmental challenges.
Additionally, 120 persons living with disabilities graduated from vocational training programs in Bori, Khana Local Government Area. These trainees received instruction in fields such as fashion design, photography, fish farming, shoemaking, and basic computer studies.
HYPREP Project Coordinator Prof. Nenibarini Zabbey stated that these efforts align with United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) recommendations to promote alternative livelihoods. He noted that the project has previously trained 5,000 people in 21 vocational skills and is currently training 2,400 youths and women in technical fields including cybersecurity, software development, and cloud mapping.
