Høyre accuses Vedum of breaking political peace after King's death
The Conservative Party (Høyre) has accused Center Party leader Trygve Slagsvold Vedum of violating a political 'civic peace' agreement following the death of King Harald V.
Following the King's passing, political parties on the Storting had agreed to suspend all political debate until his funeral on September 9. However, Vedum posted on Facebook congratulating Iceland on its decision to reject EU membership negotiations, calling the move 'wise' and reiterating the Center Party's opposition to Norwegian EU membership.
Høyre General Secretary Tom Erlend Skaug criticized the move as 'sad,' expressing surprise that a party traditionally seen as a defender of the monarchy failed to maintain the agreed-upon political silence. The Center Party has denied breaking the agreement, stating that while they have suspended public rallies and meetings during the period of national mourning, their social media comments on major global events are conducted in a 'subdued manner.'
