Høyre proposes no-show fees for subsidized dental appointments in Norway
The Conservative Party (Høyre) in Norway is proposing the introduction of penalty fees for patients who fail to attend subsidized dental appointments. Erlend Svardal Bøe, the party's health policy spokesperson, argues that missed appointments waste public resources and capacity that could otherwise be used for vulnerable groups, such as the elderly or those struggling with mental health and addiction.
Data provided by Health Minister Jan Christian Vestre reveals that nearly 7,000 people missed their public dental appointments last year. Approximately 2,000 of these individuals were in the 19–28 age demographic, a group that currently receives 75 percent state coverage for dental costs. While private clinics can currently charge no-show fees, county municipalities do not have this authority. Bøe specifies that the proposed penalties would target healthy young adults rather than more vulnerable populations.
