Lions rugby player Hyron Andrews died of aortic dissection
Lions Rugby has confirmed that 31-year-old lock forward Hyron Andrews died of natural causes following an autopsy conducted by French authorities. The autopsy determined the cause of death was an aortic dissection, likely resulting from an aortic aneurysm, which caused a significant accumulation of blood in the sac surrounding his heart.
Andrews was found in cardiac arrest in a hotel shower cubicle in France on Friday, ahead of the team’s Investec Champions Cup match against La Rochelle. Despite the tragedy, the Lions proceeded with the match in his honor, which was marked by a minute of silence and tributes from players and fans.
The player, who previously played for the Sale Sharks in England and represented South Africa at the Under-20 level, leaves behind his wife, Maighlin, and two young sons. The process to repatriate his body to South Africa is currently underway.
