HYROX Beijing faces controversy after athlete wins despite incontinence

Australian athlete Joanna Wietrzyk sparked international controversy during the HYROX Beijing competition on September 12 after suffering a bowel incontinence episode mid-race. Despite the incident, Wietrzyk continued the competition, utilizing shared functional training equipment and stations, and ultimately won the Women's Pro category with a time of 1:01:23.

The incident led to widespread criticism regarding hygiene and biohazard risks, as participants reported using contaminated mats, sleds, and equipment. In response, HYROX co-founder Moritz Fürste issued a public apology, admitting the organization failed to intervene immediately. He stated that HYROX committed an error by not reacting sooner to the situation.

HYROX China has since implemented several measures, including thorough disinfection of the venue, replacement of racing carpets, and the introduction of new rules. These updated protocols allow race directors to remove athletes for medical reasons if their condition poses a contamination risk to others. Additionally, the organizers announced full registration fee refunds for affected participants who competed during the timeframe of the incident.
