Hyrox Beijing controversy follows athlete's mid-race incontinence

Australian athlete Joanna Wietrzyk has sparked significant controversy at the Hyrox Beijing competition after winning the Pro Women division despite suffering a mid-race bowel incontinence incident. Wietrzyk, a world record holder, completed the course in 1 hour, 1 minute, and 23 seconds, but footage of the incident circulated widely on social media, showing her continuing through functional fitness stations while visibly soiled.

The incident has triggered an intense debate regarding hygiene, athlete welfare, and event management. Participants and spectators raised concerns about the safety of shared equipment, such as sled handles, rowing machines, and running tracks, which were used by subsequent competitors. Some athletes reportedly demanded refunds or apologies, citing potential exposure to contaminants.

Hyrox organizers responded by stating that the situation created ambiguity between protocols for elite and mass-participation events. Co-founder Moritz Fürste admitted the organization should have reacted more immediately. The company confirmed that affected areas were isolated and underwent deep cleaning and disinfection, including the replacement of carpeting. Hyrox also issued a warning against online harassment directed at the athlete and pledged to review its medical and biocontaminant procedures to prevent future occurrences.
