Hysata named finalist for research commercialisation award
Hysata, a spin-out company from the University of Wollongong (UOW), has been named a national finalist in the Research Commercialisation category at the 2026 Australian Financial Review Higher Education Awards. The recognition highlights the company's success in transitioning laboratory breakthroughs into a global hydrogen technology business.
Founded in 2021, Hysata focuses on capillary-fed electrolysis cells designed to enhance hydrogen production efficiency. The company’s technology reportedly achieves a 95% system efficiency when converting renewable electricity to green hydrogen, significantly higher than the 75% efficiency seen in conventional technologies.
Since its inception, Hysata has raised $220 million in private capital and received over $30 million from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency, along with support from the NSW Government. The company operates an 8,500-square-metre headquarters in Port Kembla and employs approximately 130 people in high-tech manufacturing and engineering roles.
